It is known that specific bacteria are implicated as causative factors that can lead to the development of periodontitis and that oral microbial plaque consists of different types of bacteria that live on host surfaces. Current treatment of periodontitis is based on disinfecting the supragingival and subgingival tissues in order to re-establish a microorganism-free environment [21].
