Drawing, in large part, on Anderson's (1999) and others' (e.g., Fagan & Wilkinson, 1998; Horowitz, 1983) ethnographic accounts of urban violence, researchers have begun to quantitatively examine the effect of neighborhood characteristics on the distinct nature of violent crime across neighborhoods.
