Turnover times of all three measured nitrogenous
compounds were shorter inside the bloom than adjacent: 1.47 vs
14.5 h for nitrate, 0.53 vs 2.15 h for urea, and 0.86 vs 2.86 h for ammonium. Nitrogen-specific uptake of urea and nitrate was the
same (p > 0.05) in and outside bloom water and did not vary among
size fractions (Fig. 8B). In stark contrast, nitrogen-specific ammonium
uptake was twice as fast in the total and 71-fold higher in the >20 mm size fraction,
compared to outside (Fig. 8B).
