The Generation Y cohort was born between 1980
and 2000. They have been raised during an unusual
time when life in general became less secure and
predictable. Many of their parents responded by
closely nurturing and affirming them both at home
and in their education. Sometimes described as
“helicopter parents,” they took a very active interest
in the lives of their children, and their parenting
style often included telling them how special they
are and proudly displaying their child’s academic
achievements on the bumpers of their cars.7 This
