It’s your lunch break and you have one hour and instead of going shopping for that new JIMMY CHOO you’ve been eyeing in the window shop, you pop into your cosmetic dermatologist and get mosquito bite injections with a toxin base magic potion and Voila! You’re set to go.. and in 5-7 days the magic of “Botox” unravels, taking years off your face.. and that modern fountain of youth continues on floating…
But have you heard of our version of the Ee! story behind Botox. Back in the day its real name was just plain “Botulinum Toxin” which was a form of food poisoning when ingested the neurotoxin produced by the bacterium called Clostridium botulinum causes muscle paralysis. It was discovered in the 1950s by scientists that it can reduce muscle spasms. Studies started exploring its use as a treatment for cross eyes in 1960s/1970s.
But Botox real talent was first noticed In 1987 by two Vancouver doctors, Jean and Alastair Carruthers who in the cosmetic medicine world we call “Botox founding legends”, Jean accidentally discovered by injecting her patients for uncontrollable blinking and spasming of the eye and surrounding area that the forehead wrinkles temporariluy resolved. But like all stories of struggling stars the idea of injecting toxin for wrinkles wasn’t easily perceived by both the medical society and the beauty world. Clinical trials continued till in 1993 “Botox!” started becoming famous, and in 2002 the FDA approved BOTOX® for moderate to severe frown lines between the brow.
THE GOOD!

It’s one of the best and favorite treatments out there to smooth wrinkles and prevent new ones from appearing to a certain point. Among its many uses…
1- Labeled use to treats wrinkles between the eyebrows.
2- Off label uses are more exciting! Such as wrinkles in the forehead, crows feet, bunny lines, smoker’s lines around the mouth, to raise the angels of the mouth, and chin dimpling.
3- Less common uses are to widen the eyes, reduce the gummy smile, raise droopy eyebrows, pointy chins, and bring down or bring up the tip of the nose.
4- Newly emerging uses for Botox are reducing T-zone pore sizes and oiliness, hair rejuvenation as advocated by one dermatologist in California, and breast lift!
THE BAD!
I was shocked by the mom who injected her 8 year old daughter with Botox!botox8new
Nothing is that good can be risk free, right? Right!
Risks when having cosmetic Botox injections:
1- Common side effects are dropping of the eye lids, excessive rising of the eyebrows, asymmetrical facial features, unable to whistle, gathering of food in one area of the mouth while eating.
2- Less common is double and blurred vision, decreased eyesight, dry eyes, dry mouth, headaches, and tiredness.
THE UGLY!
“Botox Parties”?! Thankfully they are becoming out of fashion because I do not recommend them, neither does the FDA. There are many things that can go wrong while performing the procedure out side a licensed center such as severe allergic reactions that can be fatal!
There was a scare a few years ago with Botox causing death stories but it was mostly when injected in large amounts such as that used in treating excessive muscle spasms.
Other serious side effects to seek immediate medical attention are difficulty swallowing, and breathing.
My best advice is that if you decide on getting the treatment
discuss it thoroughly with your treating dermatologist.
By not wanting to end the post on a grim note… This toxin is still A Star in my book! Scientists and doctors are always looking for new indications and forms of application, such as researching in using it in a cream or gel form, applying it topically with rejuvenating laser procedures, in mesotherapy, and so on.. there are still many hidden talents in this Toxin! Just wait and see.
