The Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in Southeast Asia: TAC 1976 • six important principles: • 1. Respect the independence, sovereignty, equality and national identity of each member of ASEAN. • 2. Have the right to maintain independence without interference or outside influence. • 3. Do not intervene in the internal affairs of each other. • 4. Resolve settlement of intraregional conflicts peacefully. • 5. Abstain the use of force or threat of force • 6. Strengthen solidarity of organization.
In mid-1980 the ASEAN states have changed their economic policies, and moved from the supporting domestic production in the region for the region to reduce the import of goods into support domestic production of the region for exports to other regions
