In addition, this model shows that increases in maternal
morbidity and mortality lag increases in the primary cesarean
rate by several years. Thus, even if the primary cesarean rate
were to immediately stabilize or reverse course and decrease,
additional maternal deaths would still be seen in future years
due to primary cesareans that have already taken place.
