Solid wastes that cannot otherwise be processed, and residues and other materials that are discarded after processing, are ultimately disposed of by sanitary landfilling. In developed economies, aggressive preventive measures isolate the deposited material from the environment. However, these practices result in highly expensive and technology-oriented sanitary landfilling processes. In developing countries, although open dumping is common, there is also a realization that this is inadequate. Efforts are underway to control tipping or to implement sanitary landfilling in order to minimize environmental pollution.
