In a normal mammary gland (lower left), the bacteria injure and colonize the epithelium, which triggers the inflammatory response. In mammary glands whose epithelial cells secrete lysostaphin (lower right), staphylococci are killed before they can damage the mammary tissue and induce inflammation.
