For the beam with aspect ratio = 8 and aspect ratio = 6, a clear
flexural failure mode was observed as can be seen in Fig. 4a and
b respectively. The first crack formed at the section of maximum
bending moment i.e. at the fixed end of the beam, typical of flexural
beams. This is in agreement with the results available in the
literature [5–7]. The damage was concentrated in the critical zone
(plastic hinge) with certain tensile cracks appearing at a particular
spacing in the region of lesser bending moments. This is a typical
crack pattern that can be observed for flexure critical RC beams.
In case of beam with aspect ratio = 6, marginally more damage was observed in the compression zone of concrete at critical section.
However, the failure ultimately occurs at the section of maximum
bending moment in both the cases.
