One of the most important of the post-cold war book was Semuel P. Huntington’s The Clash of Civilisation, with the cold war over future international conflict would involve not so much clashes between superpower but clashed between civilization, os cultures.
A second pathbreaking study that similarly emphasised culture factors, by Robert Putnam he is interested in the larger question of what makes democracy work or not work, and he use Italy’s various regional governments to test his hypothesis. He concludes that democracy works best in those regions with high levels of “civic community” by which he means of the active citizen participation.
A third work emphasising culture themes is that of Francis Fukuyama. This particular interest, the first provocatively entitled The End of History. and history was over, only that the struggle between grand political ideas had largely ended and the democracy was the system of the government that virtually all peoples everywhere desired.
