Justice requires that we act to distribute benefits and burdens fairly and equally. To do so means to treat wrongdoers- in this case, the assailants- without prejudice toward guilt, but with the just distribution of the benefits or burdens of publicity. Patterson, in particular, worked hard to gather relevant information about suspects in the attack and whether they had been identified, arrested and charged. To have reported the beating without bothering to let readers know whether the “bad guys” were still at large would have been morally irresponsible since it could have left the community at risk, uncertain of the presence of potential danger. Also, it would have left out essential context for telling the story of what happened to the victim.
