Hwacheon Sancheoneo (Mountain Trout) Ice Festival, a popular winter festival included in the Seven Wonders of Winter by CNN.com last year, returns this winter. It will be held around the Hwacheon Stream in Hwacheon-eup Hwacheon-gun Gangwon-do from January 5 to 27, 2013.Marking its 10th year, the festival is one of the Korea’s major winter festivals held annually in January. Hwacheon area is known for its cold valley wind, and clean waters where the sancheoneo and otters live. This unique themed-experience festival is packed with good shows and 40 or about various experience programs such as ice sledding, snow sledding, snow sculpture, ice soccer, and ice-fishing for sancheoneo. The participation fee for the sancheoneo experience program is 12,000won for adults and teenagers, and 8,000won for children, while other ice and snow related activities cost between 5,000won and 10,000won. *Sancheoneo: a species of trout native to Korea Since Sancheoneo lives mostly in the upper streams of the river which is clean and abundant in oxygen, their population is not very large. This Hwacheon Sancheoneo Festival is the only festival where one can have the sancheoneo experience.
