Scavengers surveyed generally had low levels of formal
education. Most of the scavengers at the sites had acquired
only basic education. About 65.2% of the scavengers had attended
school up to the basic level (primary and junior high schools),
22.2% had attended senior high school while the remaining 12.5%
never had any form of formal education. Consequently, the lack of
education and employable skills debars them from securing
formal employment, hence their decision to pick waste
