In the early 2000’s, David had risen steadily through the ranks of political power. He held a number of senior positions, including Foreign Secretary under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, the kind of post that is a pathway to the top rungs of leadership. When Brown resigned as leader of the Labor party in 2010, David seemed assured to succeed him. Indeed, David announced his candidacy for the top leadership position the very next day, flanked by 15 supportive Members of Parliament. He was the clear front-runner.
