2. a Draping
Drapes are used to create and maintain a sterile field
around the operative site, preventing the passage of
microorganisms, particulate matter, and fluids
between sterile and nonsterile areas. The only area
left exposed is the incision site. Plastic adhesive
drapes may be used to form a complete seal over the
skin; with these drapes, skin color is visible, and the
incision is made through the impermeable adhesive
