The probationary period is that period of time lasting anywhere from a month to six months during which the employer can assess a new employee’s ability to perform the job. It is that period of time during which an employer can normally dismiss an employee without cause as long as that termination does not violate the law. In some instances, the new employee dose not receive benefits during the probationary period. It is important for the employer to evaluate carefully a probationary employee for appointment to a regular status.
