Research question 1: What was the nature of students’initial designs and design processes?In addressing the nature of students’ initial designs, consideration is first given to the annotated features identifiedin the analysis of the students’ sketches, which also appliedto the analysis of their redesigns. From this analysis, levelsof sophistication with respect to the types and extent ofannotations included were identified. In addressing thesecond component (i.e., design processes) of this question,examples are drawn from group transcripts during theirinitial designs.
