Mental Health
Anxiety or depression affect approximately one-third of Pulmonary hypertension patients. It is important for the NP to screen for depression and make appropriate referrals to psychiatrists and psychotherapists. An interdisciplinary team approach is best as appropriate medications can be dispersed for distressing symptoms, and psychological, social, and spiritual support can be provided. NPs should also keep in mind that the caregiver faces stress, and both the patient and caregiver should be referred to a local Pulmonary hypertension support group.
