A key ‘in’ to the area is the issue of bias. Students fear being ‘seen to be biased’ so the staff begin with the premise that ‘we are all biased’ and help students work through what this might mean. Current affairs are used as a way into the domain, and these have included issues such as Iraq, the Holocaust, the BNP [the far-right British National Party], and multiculturalism which works well in the Midlands’ diverse community context…Within the subject area of citizenship, a key issue is that of ‘identity’, and in particular what it might mean to be ‘British’… the main problem here is the media portrayal of what ‘Britishness’ is, a stereotypical view which is often exclusionary of, particularly, citizens of the Islamic faith.
