if,however, human language is universal in the sense that all members of the human species have the ability to lean a language, it is not surprising that non-spoken language developed as a symbol for spoken language among the non-hearing part of humanity. deaf children learn sign language, if that is the language used around them, in much the same way as normal, hearing children learn spoken language. no one teaches them the language; they construct the grammar of the particular sign language used which they receive as input. when deaf children are born to hearing parents, they must be raised by speakers of a sign language in order to learn it. often,hearing members of the family will learn sign language in order to be able to communicate with a deaf family member.
