LH was associated with a longer surgical time than AH, with a mean difference of 45.22 minutes (95% CI, 34.45–55.97). Nonetheless, patients in the LH group had a significantly lower rate of complications than those in the AH group; the odds ratio was 0.23 (95% CI, 0.14–0.39). Postoperative fever was frequently found in both treatment groups (27.8% in the AH group versus 10.4% in LH group; P < 0.001). Patients who underwent AH also had a higher rate of blood loss exceeding 1000 mL and/or received more blood transfusions than did patients in the LH group (35.8% versus 7.8%; P < 0.001). Moreover, the AH group displayed a trend towards a higher rate of organ injuries than did the LH group (4.9% versus 0.9%) but this finding was not statistically significant. Many patients in the AH group experienced more than 1 complication. For example, 1 patient in this group had ureteric and bowel injuries, postoperative fever, blood loss greater than 1000 mL, and received blood transfusion.
