The study of Palm and Zacchi (2004) on the separation of hemicellulosic oligomers from spruce hydrolysate showed that gel filtration could be used to reduce the lignin content in the oligomer fractions, but not to remove it completely. Therefore, the lime treatment and anion exchange treatment seem to be indispensable steps to obtain HDSs products without lignin derived impurities.
