Of particular importance is the role of the civil society, which is increasingly called upon to play an important role to ensure proper accountability of the State, in some cases serve as an alternative channel for the provision of basics, and defend the interests of the poor in national and global forums. At the national level, civil society has been recognized as a significant governance partner. Thus, there is added pressure to enhance its capacity for policy level interaction with institutions of the State. Civil society will be increasingly called upon to play an important role in ensuring proper accountability of the State and the private sector, defend the poor in national and global forums, and facilitation of people in decision making.
