All around us are inventions that have changed the way we live our lives. But we use them without really thinking about how important they are. What everyday invention do you use regularly? How is it useful to you?
An everyday invention that I use a lot is the wristwatch. It was invented in 1868 by the Swiss company, Patek Philippe. Before that time people kept pocket watches. In fact, pocket watches continued to be popular until World War I when it became easier for soldiers to wear a watch on their wrists.
My watch is made of gold and has a white face. It’s useful because I’m always busy at work and I regularly need to know what the time is. I go from one meeting to another and then I have to pick up my daughter from school and take her to after-school clubs. I use my watch so I’m not late. It was my mother’s watch for a long time and so it also has sentimental value. When I look at my watch now, I think of my mum.
It’s a shame that these days watches are becoming less popular and people are using their mobile phones to tell the time. Using a wristwatch is actually faster and we’ll never give a mobile phone to our children or grandchildren to help them remember us.
