Treatment options vary and include antiplatelet agents
or anticoagulants and invasive methods, mainly with transcatheter
closure. Data supporting PFO closure come from
nonrandomized cohort series3 and remain controversial.
A percutaneous closure can be used in symptomatic individuals.9
Because the procedure appears to be safe and
effective in prevention of recurrent stroke in older and
younger populations,10 older adults should not be
excluded from PFO transcatheter closure.
