It is critical that we discern factors that help families remain resilient in the face of stressors (Gardiner & Iarocci, 2012; Lloyd & Hastings, 2008). Family resilience is defined as ''the positive behavioral patterns and functional competence individuals and the family unit demonstrate under stressful or adverse circumstances, which determine the family’s ability to recover by maintaining its integrity as a unit while insuring, and where necessary restoring, the well-being of family members and the family unit as a whole (McCubbin & McCubbin, 1996, p. 5; as cited in VanBreda, 2001)''. In the Resiliency Model of Family Stress, Adjustment, and Adaptation, McCubbin and McCubbin (1996) suggest that family hardiness plays a central role in the process of overall resilience.
