These programs primarily provide assurance that safe work practices are effective and being followed.
The V&V activities are typically observations of individuals planning, briefing, executing and debriefing of the high risk work activity from design to operation.
Success of the programs depends on several aspects such as support from line management, competency of personnel conducting V&V, consistent protocol, quality feedback and support from our workforce. Data from V&V should also be analyzed to identify trend and develop improvement actions.
In D&C Field Verification & Validations are often conducted by line management including HES specialists. However, workers who perform work activities should understand and practice the following behaviors:
Know which activities lead to high risk exposure i.e. lifting & rigging, working at height, pressure testing, hot work, confined space entry, isolation of hazardous energy, driving, operating hi line, rig move etc.
Understand safeguards against hazards for high risk tasks
Verify safeguards are in place, functioning and effective. Ask to see how the hazards have been mitigated
Maintain a healthy sense of vulnerability. Exercise SWA if safeguards are compromised. Reinforce a culture of we do it safely or not at all
