Genus Chamaesiphon
Spheriacal to oval-oblong cell; cell are heteropolar, elongate narrowly at one pole; divide asymmetrically towards narrower pole, releasing smaller of two daughter cells (“bud”, exospore, or exocyte). Larger basal or mother cell is usually attached in nature to substrate (e.g., aquatic plants, algae, rocks) at opposite pole; it continues to bud (Figure 11.1a, b). There is one plane of division. Sheath (pseudovagina) may envelope basal cell only. A few spherical buds may remain attached, forming chain.
