The studied sandstones are composed mostly of angular,
subangular to subrounded quartz grains, feldspar, detrital
carbonate lithic fragments and other lithic fragments including
chert, igneous, metamorphic and argillaceous. The source of
the carbonate rock fragments were the Jurassic to Cretaceous
Qulqula Radiolarite series and older Tertiary and Mesozoic
formations. The source of the chert rock fragments was the
Qulqula series. The source of the igneous and metamorphic
rock fragments was the Qandil series and probably their
equivalents in the Sanandij-Sirjan Range of Iran farther to the
east.
