To get further insight into the electronic states of these
sensitizers, their geometries were optimized by density
functional theory (DFT) calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d)
level.29 As presented in Figure 3, the HOMO orbitals of P1 and CW1 dyes are delocalized over the π system with some
distribution from the anchoring groups, while LUMOs are
located in the acceptor group through the π bridge. Thus, the
HOMO−LUMO excitation on P1 and CW2 induced by light
irradiation could move the electron distribution from the
anchoring groups to the acceptor moiety, consequently favoring
the interfacial electron transfer from the NiO VB to the
anchoring groups of the dyes. However, there is no electron
separation on the anchoring group between HOMO and
LUMO for CW2, indicating unfavorable charge transfer for this
dye. It is worthy noting that the new sensitizer with pyridine
anchoring group is not prepared to break any photovoltaic
records.
