He brought the child to Walter. Walter said, “Take her to my sister in Bologna. Tell her to look after her well. Do not tell her that it is my child.”
Walter watched Griselda. She seemed to love him in the same way. But she was very quiet and her face was often sad.
Then a little boy was born. Walter was glad, and his people were glad. They said, “This child is our prince. One day we shall be his people.”
But after two happy years the same bad thought came to Walter. Walter was like some other people. He wanted to be sure about his loving and patient wife.
This time, he said the same thing as before, but he added, “My people do not want a grandson of Janicula for their prince. So, again, I order you to give your child to my man.”
