Feminist group counseling with South Asian women who have survived IPV is an appropriate intervention due the influence of intersectionality of their gender and cultural identity on their coping with abuse, in addition to the collectivistic orientation of South Asian culture. While Asian Americans in general have been shown to drop-out of individual counseling at high rates (Uba, 1994) and utilize modalities of healing other than individual counseling (i.e., utilizing kinship or religious=spiritual support networks) (Inman et al., 2001), it is important to note that the South Asian women described in this case study attended group regularly and were active participants in a group work process. Group counselors may find the case study example helpful in not only designing a similar group, but also tailoring the group design, activities, and feminist perspective into interventions with South Asian women survivors who present for individual counseling.
