Aggressive behavior: hitting, biting and fighting
What is common aggressive behavior?
Many children go through a phase when they exhibit aggressive behavior. Physical aggression is a normal part of a toddler’s development, it is a form of a temper tantrum. Biting, kicking, pushing and hitting can be common when groups of young children are together. Anytime someone gets hurt, your first responsibility is to tend to the child who was hurt. Comfort that child and treat the wound if necessary. Then, turn your attention to the child who did the biting and discipline him. Speak with your host parents about how you should respond to aggressive behavior. If it happens more than once, address the issue with your host parents and discuss together how you can help the child. Aggressive behavior should not be ignored, instead children need your help getting through that stage and managing their frustration.
Why do children use aggression?
Aggression is a form of communication. When children are very little they are exploring their world and they probably don’t realize the result of physical aggression. They don’t mean to hurt anyone. They could also be copying something they have seen. When children get older they might use aggression in situations when they are frustrated and are trying to get some attention. They don’t know how to control themselves or use words to express frustration or anger. They slowly start to learn that biting or hitting is very dangerous; that they could seriously hurt another child.
