I have many goals for my life, and I picture my future following a specific path. During my high school career, I have been working toward my goals; I have also been thinking about which university would best help me succeed in the future. Attending Drake University would allow me to follow the path I envision for myself.

My long-term goal is to have a career in pharmacy. I want to pursue a career in pharmacy because pharmacists play an important role in society which I want to be a part of. Most people think pharmacists only hand out prescriptions, but they do so much more, especially educating patients about their medications. This education includes identifying dosage, listing possible side effects, and communicating proper usage of the medication, which is important to the patient’s health and well being. Good pharmacists are not just ”good with people”, they also care about their patients. I love working directly with people. I am very much a “people person” and need to have a career where I interact with others. I also naturally care about other people very much, which would allow patients to feel comfortable talking to me about their medication. Another reason I want to become a pharmacist is I have always wanted a career in healthcare. I looked into all possible healthcare careers and decided on pharmacy due to my passion for chemistry. I love chemistry because it is literally everywhere around us. I also find reactions between chemicals very interesting. It amazes me how combining a group of chemicals together can lead to a new and different compound. I am eager to learn more about the chemical composition of medications that cure everyday and severe illnesses.

Getting the very best education is the only way I can become the best pharmacist I can be. I have challenged myself all through out my high school career by taking the most advanced courses available at my school. I have also taken many courses that are offered for college credit. Wanting to attend Drake in the near future keeps me motivated to do well in school and keep my 4.0 GPA. But education is not just about grades. I have been involved in activities and sports ranging from volleyball to speech to dance team. I have also volunteered for meals-on-wheels and Newell-Fonda School Improvement Advisory Committee. I have served on student government and been selected for National Honor Society. Being involved in all of these activities has taught me many skills that are important to be successful in life. I have learned how to manage my time properly, which is key to organization. Another skill I have gained is leadership; this skill allows me to take charge of situations and make sure things are done properly.

The organization I am most proud to be involved with is National Honor Society. Of course, as a member I show excellence in scholarship, leadership, service, and character, but the National Honor Society chapter at my school is more difficult to become a member of than most. Not only did I have to have good grades and be nominated by teachers based on my character, I also planned and executed a service project in the summer following my sophomore year. My project consisted of improving our town’s golf course. I painted lockers, counter fronts and benches. I also made stepping stones, planted flowers, and added personal touches to the flower beds. My project took a total of twenty-eight hours, but this was only the start of my community service. My National Honor Society Chapter also does many group service projects throughout the year.

I want to continue getting the very best education possible by attending a great university. I believe Drake University is the best choice for me, because the pharmacy program is nationally ranked clearly indicating that it is a program that will prepare me well. Obtaining a degree from this university may be a challenge, but all the hard work will be worth it as I will have the confidence I need to become a great pharmacist. I see myself fitting in perfectly at Drake. All the students seem highly motivated and eager to learn like I am. I also like the fact that campus is small, but not too small. Class sizes remind me of my hometown school which is comforting. While on my campus tour, we walked past several chemistry labs. I took a peek at the classes and I could picture myself being in that exact class room learning in the future.

I have been given the gift of intelligence; I have used this gift to become a very organized person. Being organized has allowed me to set specific goals for myself. I’m very capable of achieving these goals because I am a very determined and focused person. I believe with the right education and preparation I will grow to be an individual that will make many valuable contributions to society.
