Sustainable seafood
Despite a slight decline in seafood consumption among Spanish households since the start of the crisis, the Spanish market remains one of the largest markets for seafood in the world.
Spain is the third largest global importer of seafood, the largest importer in the EU and second only to Portugal in the EU in per capita seafood consumption, with an average of 36.4 kilos per person a year (double the EU average).
In a context where domestic demand clearly outstrips local supply, Spain is heavily reliant on fish and seafood imports to meet consumption needs, importing around 70 percent of its fish. It maintains the largest fishing fleet among EU member states in terms of tonnage.
The two main domestic trends observed which have prompted interest at government level, in the media and among consumers and retailers are:
sustainable fishing
food wastage.
