A variety of interview formats can be used. In a structured or a semi-structured format, the questions are planned in advance, in cluding follow-up questions or probes. The areas to be covered in the interview are based on the aspects of instruction being e ated. In an open or unstructured interview, one general question or comment starts the discussion and the participant's responses lead the process from there. In an open interview, it is more difficult to ensure that each of the aspects of instruction to be evaluated is in cluded. When interviews are carried out with small groups rather than with individuals, more structure is helpful. In small groups, peo- ple's responses will be stimulated by the general discussion, but some individual voices may be overlooked if we are not careful to include everyone.
