With fossil trunks measuring up to 1mJ31.ft in diameter and
30mJ100ft in height, the long-extinct cordaitales were some
of the tallest trees' growing in the Carboniferous Period,
Their large strap-shaped leaves were similar in shape to the
living kauri pines, Agathis, of the Chilean pine, or monkey-
puzzle, group, and were arranged in a spiralling fashion
along slender, long branches,
