, with a clear pattern indicating
an overwhelming positive or negative effect of addition of a small
area of differing farm type. The pattern of change in response was
not symmetrical around 50:50 indicating that there is a complex
interaction
between
the
farm
type
and
its
location
that
determines
whether the positive or negative effect is enhanced. The skylark
showed a different pattern, whereby increasing heterogeneity by
combining farm types in the same landscape had a positive effect
compared to the arithmetic expectation, i.e. in this case hetero-geneity was always beneficial.
