One of Alberti's last and most important commissions was the church of Sant' Andrea in Mantua. Unlike either the remodeling job of San Francesco in Rimini or the new facade of an existing church as with Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Sant' Andrea was a church to be designed and built from the ground up. Located on a fairly difficult site, the exterior of the church would have to address a piazza without being able to front it fully.
