** WARNING MUCH FEELS AND BLABBERING**
I think a lot of people were expecting WINNER to be a hip-hop based group, which is what YG is known for. But from WIN, Winner wasn't really like that. They make songs from the emotions and feelings they have and express it in their meaningful lyrics and captivating voices and tunes (I think they've said this before, too). Besides Mino's solo song about his swag <3, all the songs have meaningful lyrics and messages they have to their audience.
From the moment Lee Hi debuted with 1.2.3.4, I knew that YG was really trying to broaden their musicality, because Hi is the first YG artist to sing in the soulful genre, rather than electronic, dance, or hip hop music that BIGBANG and 2NE1 are known for (even though they've been experimenting with other genres for quite some time as well). And same with AKMU with their folk/acoustic songs. People just need to accept the fact that Winner doesn't really have a genre they solely base their songs off of; they make songs that work for them.
YG should be known for their quality of music, not just hip-hop/westernized music. Winner is Winner, not Bigbang or 2NE1 or YG. The only real similarities between Winner and Bigbang is that there are 5 members with distinctive personalities and make their own songs (and both have the same age difference). Other than that, they're really different as a group.
I understand many people were disappointed because they debuted with 2 sad songs as their title tracks, rather than a upbeat song to jam too. But you can't deny that the songs were well done and it was a good, solid debut (well I think so....). From K-pop, I've learned to appreciate the songs of all kinds of genres, so as long as a group releases good music, I'll appreciate the song as is.
Plus, having an upbeat song wouldn't really fit their "model concept," since we wouldn't be able to focus on their tall good-looking selves, so I understood that they took a different turn on their debut, rather than the typical boy idol group. KAY I'M DONE JUST NEEDED TO GET OFF MY CHEST.
I hope many of you will appreciate them as artists and their beautiful music and songs, not as much of an idol group that needs to please everyone with sexy stares to the camera and raunchy thrusting (and if you want hip hop from Winner, listen to Mino's solo songs or pre-debut tracks. THEY'RE WONDERFUL).
sidetrack: can't wait to see seunghoon's amazing choreo for "empty," it's going to be beautiful <3
NOW I'M DONE.
Tl;dr YG Family does a well done job at anything that they do. And let them do what they want to do in order to give good music.
