Knowledge and information are becoming the foundation for many new services and products. Knowledgeand
information-intense products such as computer games require a great deal of knowledge to produce.
Entire new information-based services have sprung up, such as Lexis, Dow Jones News Service, and
America Online. These fields are employing millions of people. Knowledge is used more intensively in the
production of traditional products as well. In the automobile industry, for instance, both design and
production now rely heavily on knowledge and information technology.
