i. Expounding on how “talking with others” can be used to distract members from the auditory hallucination
ii. Encouraging members to discuss choosing people to talk to at home, the topics to talk about, and appropriate places for
conversations
iii. Practicing the new technique in pairs
5 Technique of “stop and ignore the voices”
i. Introducing the new technique and its usefulness
ii. Teaching members to say “stop” out loud when hearing voices
iii. Teaching members to “ignore” the voices and avoid following their commands
iv. Practicing the technique in the group and allowing group discussion
6 Technique of “watching the television”
i. Teaching members to start “watching the television” and focus on the programs when they begin to hear voices
ii. Members should change the programs/channels when symptoms still exist
7 Teaching the “reading” technique
i. Introducing the reading technique and teaching members to select a book of their choice and start reading it out loud
when they hear voices
ii. Practicing in the group: members take turns reading articles of their choices from the provided newspaper to the group,
and allowing discussion
8 Technique of “singing rhythmically”
i. Explaining how “singing rhythmically” can be used as a distracting method to reduce auditory hallucinations
ii. Practicing in the group: telling members to choose one of their favorite songs and start singing, and allowing members to
verbalize feelings
9 Technique of “breathing relaxation”
i. Sharing experiences regarding members’ home practice
ii. Introducing the principles of relaxation and its usefulness, focusing on “abdominal breathing exercise”, and allowing time
for practice in the group
10 Post-test
i. Evaluation of the program and group termination
