Furthermore, community connectedness has been identified as a protective factor against psychological distress, decreasing the likelihood of smoking (Johns et al., 2013) Positive health behaviors, such as not smoking, can often result from the disclosure of one's sexual identity, or outness, depending on the circumstances (Legate, Ryan, & Weinstein, 2012) Each of these aspects of social integration has been recognized as a key element in successful smoking cessation (Burns, Fu, & Joseph, 2014). More research is needed to understand the association of social integration components to smoking behaviors among LGBT populations, particularly for those living in smaller communities.
