Aluminium
• Highly resistant to corrosion
• When exposed to air, the metal develops thin film of aluminium oxide
• Aluminium is normally coated for packaging applications
Steel : Steel grades for food contact packaging applications are
• Essentially electrolytic tinplate (ETP)
• Chromium oxide coated steel (ECCS) is prevent atmospheric oxidation or sulphur staining
Tin
• Applied as a thin layer on steel used for metal packaging
• Using uncoated tin is limited by the various possible interactions between the metal surface and the foodstuff.
Stainless steel
• Iron alloys with better corrosion resistance because they contain large amount of Cr
• Many of them are approved for food contact.
• Stainless steels are expensive alloys and for this reason their used as food packaging material, container of beverages, processing plant, large storage container, kitchen tool
