Hair breakage. The blunt or frayed ends of breakage
are best visualized with the use of a hair card, which is
a piece of paper or card that provides both a white
background for the examination of dark hairs and a
dark background for the examination of light hairs.
Using this tool, the clinician is able to determine
whether the short hair is new growth or if it is broken
hair. Is the hair of all lengths or is most of it short and
close to the scalp? Distribution is also key. Where is the
broken hair located—in areas of friction, over the frontal
hairline, or over the occiput?
