This review synthesized the findings of currently available studies
that have examined the impact of postpartum sleep duration, stress,
and depression on PPWR. Short sleep duration was associated with
greater postpartum weight retention. Specifically, women with less
than 5 hours of sleep at 6 months postpartum had a two- to threefold
risk of retaining more than 5 kg of weight at one to three years postpartum.
Postpartum stress was not associated with PPWR,while the association
between postpartum depression and PPWR was mixed.
Women with depression only in the postpartum period had a higher
risk of retaining pregnancy-related weight for over 5 kg, compared to
those without depression both during pregnancy and postpartum.
