IMPLICATION FOR SCHOOL HEALTH
Integration of the TPB and life skills training into a
school-based adolescent drug-use prevention program
provides practical ways to predict behavioral intention
and tomodify behavior. We found that it was critical to
first gain support for the program from administrators
and teachers and to provide extensive training and
monitoring of the teachers in implementation. Interactive
delivery methods helped students to become
more engaged. Having groups co-led by student peers
a grade or 2 ahead provided role models. Worksheets
and a parent-child workbook involved the family. Ideally,
booster sessions, shorter reviews in subsequent
school years, would reinforce knowledge about drug
use and the commitment to remain drug free. Practical
life skills such as problem-solving, coping with stressful
situations, and development of social skills and ways
to communicate all have broader applications than
just preventing drug use. Implementation of such a
program in the junior high school setting effectively
reinforces students’ intention not to use drugs and has the potential to protect students from dropping
out of school as well as decreasing their risk of later
drug use.
