All the members of our energy neighbourhood Trivilia are trying to save lots of energy and 1 of the ways we are trying to this is by buying wisely. We are trying to think up of ideas on how we can conserve resources when we are shopping.
When clothes are gone too small for us we recycle them or we give them to our younger sisters. Also now that we are older we have given our toys and the books that we had when we were younger to the local primary school or playschool or sometimes we give them to the charity shop in Thurles. When my brother ripped his trousers last week my mother patched it up with some old material so he can continue to wear the trousers.
Recently my parents bought a stove which we have put in in our sitting room. With the stove we do not have to spend as much money on oil. Also our house is much warmer. We have a back boiler to the stove so therefore we do not have to turn on the immersion anymore. We do not use the oil heating much since we got the stove.
We bought a small oven last week that you plug in so now we don't have to turn on the big oven if we only want to cook something small.
We always buy LED light bulbs to save more electricity.
When we buy frozen food we put it in the freezer to keep the freezer full and the freezer is in the garage so therefore the freezer it is in a cold room.
We have bought a clothes horse so we can line dry our clothes in the winter by the stove.
We never buy bottled water because we always use our tap water which comes from a spring well near our house.
We make a shopping list of what we need so then we will only buy what is needed at home and will not have to throw anything out.
We buy 3 litre cartons of milk instead of having to buy a few of the smaller cartons to reduce the packaging, and waste.
We always use refillable ink cartidges.
We have bags in the boot of our car that we bring with us when we are going shopping so we don't have to buy new ones each time we go shopping.
In my lunch I bring my water in a durable bottle so i can use it for a few days.
Our dish cloths are all washable so we do not have to buy new ones, and finally
We reuse food containers for storage.
The members of Trivilia are all making a big effort to save resource use and we are hoping that we can spend our money wisely to save more electricity.
