Many Thai people love their King because they're told to, just like many Americans love their president because they are told to. Thais are never presented with any reasons not revere the King. Thais are essentially brought up to revere and idolize him as a demigod—despite the fact that many Thai people live in poverty and the King is the richest monarch in the world, valued at 30 billion USD.
Because of the lese-majesté laws protecting the King, speaking or writing I'll of His Majesty could land you in jail. As an example, two young playwrights were recently jailed for producing a university play that was purported to have 'made fun' of the King.
All of this is not to say that there are no reasons to love the King. He has done a good job of keeping the peace in Thailand.
